Ivan's Roses
homeroses1.JPGIvan has wanted to plant roses for a very long time. I think he wanted them to be HIS roses and as you can see from the picture, he now has HIS roses.

We've had rose gardens in the past - since our first house. In general, he is not a gardening kind of person. He helps out in the vegetable garden, but flowers- not his thing. But he fell in love with roses.  We had all sorts of colors and styles - he liked the single blooms best -  no floribundas for him!

When we sold that house, we considered digging up the rose bed, but that seemed rather mean and small and selfish. We started a new crop of rose bushes at the next house, but they didn't do as well. Not enough sun, I suspect.  The giant oak tree that lowered our electric bill in summer also shaded the rose garden. Oaks are jealous mistresses who seem only happy around poison oak (which we also had at times). After that, we got out of the rose planting mode until this spring.

I helped him plant roses this spring in the odd little raised bed that the former owner  put a light pole in the middle of. (Yes, Coralyn, I know that is a preposition and I see that it is dangling.) We found cheap rose sticks at WalMart's clearance table and planted them deep with rose food around their dark, stubby ankles. There was not a tinge of green on any of them.

Ivan's mom contributed three healthy bushes she purchased at a gardening center. They came healthy and green and ready to bloom. The white rose bush she gave us is thriving - outdoing itself with fat hanging blossoms. Sadly, we lost one of the WalMart stalks to grasshoppers and we have one that is struggling. She may not make it through the summer. We're babying her along.

The rest of our WalMart sticks are doing their best to show us what they can do.  When we bought them, they were such bare roots, we really didn't know what we were getting. They are gallant surprises. We have a lavender and several pinks and a deep red solitaire that blooms one blossom at a time.

Roses in every room! Did Marie Antoinette have such riches? Solomon in all his glory didn't buy bare roots at WalMart, but he didn't get anything better. We even have roses in the bathroom.

Decadence. Pure decadence.

Saturday is our wedding anniversary. Twenty three years ago, we walked "down the aisle" into our first rose garden and read the vows we had written for each other.  We'll be celebrating this year by clipping more roses-after we get home from Fancy Farm- another family tradition that will be the subject of another post.

Solomon in all his glory, indeed!
